I had to travel into our Trumbull offices for meetings yesterday and came across a feminist pin that I wore in London for a role play exercise we were doing. This lead my co-workers and I to talk about whether or not I was a feminist. So is Sara Malo a feminist...hmmmm guess that is the million dollar question?!
I never really thought about that much but I suppose I am. Not one of these extreme feminists that hate men but more on the lines of riding the Women's Empowerment train. I also wouldn't group me into being an average Woman either. Owning my own home and currently doing this life thing alone has pushed me to teach myself how to fix and do things I never thought I would. From electrical work of replacing light and fan fixtures, cutting down trees and knowing how to bleed the oil tank line when I forget to order oil. Let's just say I force the people in my life to either teach me or I watch a lot of YouTube videos on things I don't know how to do. I have actually always done most things myself because that is my type A personality. I think for me it's important I teach my daughter that you don't need anybody to take care of you especially being a Woman. And my son certainly knows his Mom isn't afraid to do things herself. I remind him that sometimes when we are playing catch and I throw the ball really hard or when we are playing one on one in hoop and I occasionally stuff him LOL. He once told me men are way better at sports than Women. I then had to force him to watch the YouTube video of Jennie Finch striking out Albert Pujols which my daughter and I like to watch often! I really can't think of anything I wouldn't at least try to do but I am also not afraid to fail at things and ask for help either. I use this rule in my professional life as well. I am extremely lucky to work with powerful and successful Women in this industry. I have heard some amazing Women keynote success stories from Women Presidents, VP's and CEO's and I follow many on social media. They inspire me on a daily basis.
This leads me to an amazing scholarship I support that empowers young Women to chase their dreams. The Women's Empowerment Scholarship that a friend of mine founded. I am a huge supporter of all the local scholarships in town and try to educate anyone that is looking for educational funds. I think it's so important us Women support each other and lead by example. I have been lucky enough to attend some of these events and thought their first selection of candidates this year was brilliant. You can support their most recent fundraiser by purchasing a calendar raffle to kick off their fundraising efforts for next year. I wish them continued success in their amazing mission.
Empower the other Women in your life especially those that need to be picked up and brushed off. And never limit yourself on what you choose to do just because your a Woman.
