It's amazing how much better you feel when you eat the right foods especially before or after exercise. If I am planning a longer run I need to eat some carbs the night before and my go to is a monkey sandwich about two hours before run! Other wise known as whole wheat bread, natural peanut butter and a banana. The most important thing you can do for yourself is hydration and drinking tons of water. A common mistake I have seen is people think you can hydrate the morning of or even during the long runs but actually hydration starts the night before.
Here are a few of my other snack and shake choices!
1. Two hard boiled eggs and a greek plain yogurt is usually a typical start to my day or if I am rushing around a cliff bar. I really hate breakfast besides coffee but everyone says breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
2. I like to have a protein shake after my runs. My current shake right now is no fat almond milk, flax seed, handful of walnuts or almonds, tbsp of unsalted natural peanut butter, scoop of protein and a banana. I eat at least two bananas a day because I get terrible muscle spasms in my legs if I don't. My brother also puts black coffee in his shakes which they say can be good for you.
3. I LOVE to have smoothie bowls for lunch or dinner. I use a frozen fruit mix that usually has kale mixed with cranberry juice. On top of the smoothie I include a tbsp of unsalted natural peanut butter, almonds, coconut and banana. Other good things to add are spinach and blueberries. Surprisingly it does fill you up.
4. My sister in-law makes the most delicious humus you have ever had. So when I am lucky enough for her to bring me some I love to pair that with carrots and fresh cucumbers from my Dad's garden.
Keep being the healthy you and put good foods in your body!
