Newbie Runners...this is for you

As I have said before in this blog if your trying to lose weight or add cardio to your life running is the cheapest and quickest way to do that. You can burn those unwanted calories by just lacing up your running shoes.

Here are some tips I have learned over the years that can help you get started.

1. The one thing I would definitely spend money on is a good pair of running shoes. It may take you a while to find the pair you like, brand and the right fit. Some fitness stores can help you size your running sneakers. I have gone through many pairs of running sneakers including Nikes, Asics and Brooks. Once I bought a pair of Brooks from that day forward I will never run in anything else. I feel they are the best running shoes out there. I always size up one full size from my current shoe size too because of my running stride. Depending on how many miles you plan to run make sure you are changing your running shoes when they are worn out by checking your midsoles and outsoles. A good pair of running shoes should last you 400-500 miles.

2. Certainly do not worry about your pace. Go for distance running at a slow pace and do not worry about your time, eventually you can build your mileage gradually. If your training to win races that is another story or training to run a half/full marathon you will need to slow your pace way down anyways. Make sure you add in rest days as well because that is part of training the right way, your body needs rest. Don't be hard on yourself at first if you need to walk a little it happens to the best of us. But if you are just starting out remember you are out there trying and running and that is more than half the battle.

3. Join a Running Group. If there isn't a Running Group where you live try and find friends to run with. It's amazing how 3 miles on your own can seem never ending but with a friend and some good gossip it's fun! If you get into longer mileage it can be boring alone.

4. Use a Running app on your phone or fitbit. I use the Nike app and typically post my runs on social media it keeps me motivated knowing I am motivating others. Another great one to use is Strava and you can save your running routes and follow your running friends.

5. Make a mix of your favorite running music that gets you pumped up. I typically shuffle pandora and just carry my phone. I definitely choose wisely with my music when running hills when I need more motivation! Be careful with your headphones however when running on the road. I never use headphones because I want to be able to hear the traffic around me. Many times I have had cars headed right for me that I have had to dodge and jump in the woods.

6. My last tip can be scary for some. Try and not go the same route every time you run. There are definitely some creepers out there that will follow you. I know some runners that carry mace with them every time they run. I don't go to that extreme I mean heck nobody wants to kidnap me I would drive them to drink LOL. But seriously, if you feel safer with it then definitely get a permit and carry some.

Be safe all you new runners and if you ever want a partner you can always choose me!
