Not Everyone can Win...

Pic from "A League of Their Own" such a good flick!

You won't catch me posting political or religious related topics in this blog but I will certainly post about things that annoy the hell out of me!

This whole new generation and everyone is a winner thing kinda makes me crazy. I see it in the schools, especially during the end of year awards and in all level of sports I am around. Is this really what we want to be teaching the youth? I can definitely say it's not what we want to be teaching our youth. This kind of mentoring or parenting or whatever you want to call it is a huge mistake. Your only setting up them up for failure because that is not the real world. In every level of sports whether it's a team or individual event someone wins and someone loses. Someone is going to win that special award and someone is not going to win that special award. And that's ok I think losing if you are properly taught teaches you to work harder for your goals. That is if you have the drive because lord knows some people don't. It reminds me when I was a freshman in High-School trying out for the Varsity sports teams. I wanted to make those teams and I was just an average athlete so I ran, practiced my ass off, had my father and brothers drill line drives at me. I wanted to earn my starting positions on my own and not send my parents to ask for my playing time. Actually I would have died if my parents ever talked to my coaches or teachers I did that myself. Even as hard as we worked we also lost a lot. Heck we lost the Western MA final softball game my senior year at Szot Park in Chicopee and that shit still haunts me. But that day one team had to win and one team had to lose.

Think about this on the bigger level when you go into a job interview. Your not always going to get the job for all sorts of reasons. Your not always going to make the best presentation sometimes someone might do it better than you do. People...this is life plain and simple. I am pretty sure the way I am raising my children isn't the norm but if they have an issue with school or sports it's on them to fix. It's on them to get extra help or to practice more to get better. I am teaching them to speak up for themselves because as they know I always have their back but they need to be the voice for themselves. I lead by example and show them you don't always need to be the best but you can certainly get better if you put your mind to it. I tell my children you want to win that special award then you need to stand out. You need to be a leader and have respect for everyone around you. You need to do something above what everyone else is doing. And I always tell my children your not above anyone. Can you be better than others at things yes of course but that doesn't make you above them. Everyone is fighting the same fight we are.

I guess my advice is simple if you are reading this. Stop attacking Coaches, Teachers and Peers if your kid doesn't win or gets that starting position. Instead help your children get better and teach them to work harder. I don't care how young or old you are you can always work on yourself to get better at something in life.
